I’d say Ghost in the Shell was one of the bigger disappointments of 2017 but considering what I had been seeing before its release, including the director, expectations were vastly lowered and it was pretty much matched. No, it’s not horrible but in trying to satisfy fans and the general audience, the studio failed at both.

The Jungle Book is a success in Disney’s obsession with adapting beloved animated movies into live action features and while the likes of Maleficent and to some extent Cinderella weren’t great, this one is entertaining for almost the entire family, though some scenes might be a tad too frightening for younger viewers.

Captain America: Civil War is a good movie for sure and I did enjoy elements of it and the fight between Cap and Iron Man was well done, however, the film does have its issues but on the whole is entertaining.

Hail, Caesar for me was a major misstep for the Coen Brothers even with what certainly passion behind their love letter to 1950s Hollywood. Outside of George Clooney and Tilda Swinton, the other cast members were more or less cameo appearances.

Her is not only a moving and emotionally charged film about relationships and technology, but it also features an incredible performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson (her voice anyway) with honorable mention to Amy Adams. The Blu-ray released by Warner Brothers features great video, good audio and some so-so bonus materials.

Just Cause is an overwrought court room drama that is absolutely boring to get through, despite it only being ~100-minutes, and featuring performances which are at best, uninspiring not to mention a predictable plot. The Blu-ray unfortunately doesn’t have much to offer. There are no features and the video/audio transfers are fine but hardly amazing.

The Horse Whisperer is an all around beautiful movie. The story is both heartbreaking and ultimately uplifting, the cinematography is Oscar-worthy (unfortunately it was not nominated), the direction inspiring and the acting, especially from Redford and Thomas, amazing. The Blu-ray has good audio/video transfers but falls flat in the features department.

In the hands of another director who adherer’s to the old substance over style of filmmaking, The Island could’ve been a profound, even memorable film. Instead, we get several insane (and inane) action sequences with some semblance of a substantive story where the action takes precedence over all else with Bay’s signature shots thrown in for good measure.

The Spirit is a sad misstep of a film big on style – even if it is copied almost exactly from Sin City – but short on story. I know what Miller was going after with the campy nature but what might look good on the page (screenplay or comic book) may not translate too well on the screen. The jokes weren’t funny and the acting, when it not atrocious, was way over-the-top not surprisingly headlined by Samuel L. Jackson.
