When it comes down to it Mortdecai is just a bad movie. None of the jokes worked and Johnny Depp’s latest outlandish performance is no longer charming and the respectable supporting cast is completely wasted. This is not even worth a rental. As for the Blu-ray, the bonus material is basic while the video/audio transfers are more than respectable.

The Talented Mr. Ripley isn’t the perfect suspense-drama and could have been so much better with a cast consisting of Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Cate Blanchett and with Anthony Minghella at the helm, but it still has some superb moments. The Blu-ray released by Warner Bros. offers all the features from the DVD version and respectable audio/video transfers.

Iron Man 3 is hardly the perfect comic book movie and while it certainly was better than its predecessor, which was more of a prequel to The Avengers, it didn’t quite meet the standards of the first movie. Even so, Downey Jr. once again hits it out of the park and the plot itself, albeit simple, was engaging enough. I wasn’t overly thrilled with the villains although Kingsley and Pearce give it their all. Iron Man 3 is a fun, entertaining film perfect to kick off the theatrical summer season.

Masters of the Universe is a silly movie that seems to be better regarded today than it was back in 1987. The visual effects at times is lame, the acting fairly substandard save for Frank Langella and the story is fairly thin, though given the source material (a toy line and cartoon series), one has to give credit to the writer for doing his best. Having said all that, there’s little doubt this is at least a fun flick to watch every couple of years. It’s a cheesy picture that doesn’t take itself overly seriously.

The Avengers is one of the funnier movies of 2012. It perfectly brings together these heroes into a story that, albeit, is fairly mundane but with action and adventure which is both fun and thrilling under the tutelage of Joss Whedon. The Blu-ray here boasts solid video and audio transfers but the features are much to be desired with only a few minutes in one featurette covering the actual making of the movie. Still, the movie makes up for the discs shortcomings and is well worth purchasing.

Snow White and the Huntsman had great potential between the cast (Charlize Theron especially), adequate direction from Rupert Sanders, and some truly impressive art and production design. However, for all the good the film has going for it, everything else is kind of bland. The opening of the movie is fine but the middle portion meanders and Kristen Stewart has limited emotions making it difficult to really care about what happens to her.

A Perfect Murder might not be the ‘perfect’ thriller but it is an effective one. Director Andrew Davis manages to keep the pacing going throughout the fairly lengthy running time despite a predictable storyline and characters. The performances from the three leads are all well done albeit I’ve seen better work from each of them in the past and since the movie’s release. Still, this a good flick worth checking out if you haven’t already, just don’t judge too critically by comparing it to Hitchcock…

Cat Run is by no means a terrible film and does hold some entertainment value, but save for one of the characters, it’s mostly forgettable – yes, even with an abundant amount of female nudity at the beginning. This is the kind of movie that borrows from other films though if you like the cast and have nothing better to watch, then it might be worth giving this a whirl.

The Descendants  is propelled by a powerful and well-written screenplay, some solid performances from the supporting cast and an understated but amazing one by George Clooney, perhaps his best, if not most poignant, in a long while. The Blu-ray itself offers up nice video and audio transfers while the features, although nice, are much to be desired.

Contagion has some things going for it, but mainly from an acting and technical level rather than the story. The cast is mostly good despite having a limited amount of screen time and Soderbergh’s visual style, while nothing new from what he’s done in the past, still looks stunning and gives the film a certain gravitas yet at the same time I felt like I was more or less a spectator versus becoming involved or entrenched with what was going on.

Country Strong is a mess of a film. Most of the performances are fine and the songs, even if it is country which I normally don’t like, are catchy but the story doesn’t resonate and the characters, at least two of them, aren’t just very likeable. The video and audio transfers are good and while there are several features, they don’t amount to much except the basics.
