The Equalizer has its share of problems, primarily with the pacing though some more editing would’ve made for a strong picture, but even so, the film does ride on Denzel Washington’s charisma and screen presence and that alone makes this at least worth a rental.

Fences was based on a stage play — and certainly looks it — of the same name and while it does boast a fine cast, headlined by Denzel Washington (who also directed) and Viola Davis, but despite the talent, it’s a talky and often tedious drama with a loathsome main character that even the charming Washington can’t make him very likeable.

Devil in a Blue Dress is a fine drama/thriller propelled by its performances more so than the plot. Denzel Washington, Jennifer Beals and even Tom Sizemore, who straddles the line of hammy acting, all are good and make this a worthwhile venture. The Blu-ray released by Twilight Time is decent but not great with so-so bonus material though the video and audio transfers are nice.

Virtuosity isn’t a great movie by any stretch but I don’t think it intended to be taken seriously. As a whole, Flight is hardly a terrible movie and there are far worse choices out there, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was severely disappointed. The Blu-ray has a limited selection of features but is worth watching and both of the audio/video transfers are quite nice. If you like Denzel Washington and don’t mind melodrama on steroids or alcohol, then this might be worth a rental, otherwise wait for this to air on television.

Unstoppable may not bring anything new to the action-thriller genre and indeed Tony Scott’s direction does tend to be over-the-top but it’s still very entertaining thanks in large part to the cast headlined by Denzel Washington, proving once again the charm he brings to any production, and Chris Pine whose own star is on the rise.
