Isn’t it Romantic might not be a great movie but for sure better than I expected, especially given Rebel Wilson actually displayed some charm and wasn’t at all obnoxious like she was in Pitch Perfect 3; this is probably worthy as a rental.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post.
The opinions I share are my own.

THE MOVIE — 3.0/5

Plot Synopsis: Natalie (REBEL WILSON) is a New York architect who works hard to get noticed at her job, but is more likely to deliver coffee and bagels than design the city’s next skyscraper. Things go from bad to weird when she gets knocked unconscious during a subway mugging and magically wakes up to find herself in an alternate universe. Always cynical about love, Natalie’s worst nightmare soon comes true when she suddenly discovers that she’s playing the leading lady in a real-life romantic comedy.

Quick Hit Review: Rebel Wilson broke into stardom courtesy of the Pitch Perfect trilogy although for me, the third entry where she was pretty much front and center, I found her, or at least her character, to be obnoxious, so can’t say I was looking forward to her first movie in a leading role, Isn’t it Romantic fearing she’d fall into the same traps as Melissa McCarthy or Zach Galifinakis. And I will say, I was partially wrong. While Wilson does pratfall, I did find her mostly endearing and the material, albeit thin as evidenced by the short running time, did work illicit a few chuckles from me.

The supporting roles were fine. Liam Hemsworth has glimpses of the Hemsworth family charm though nothing really to the character and even Adam Devine, somebody who never impressed me comedic-ally, shared some genuinely nice chemistry opposite Wilson.

Isn’t it Romantic was directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, who also helmed the immensely entertaining horror-spoof (similar to this that takes on rom-coms) The Final Girls as well as A Very Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.75/5

This release comes with a semi-glossy slip cover and a redemption code for the Digital HD copy. Features are on the thin side with I Wanna Dance (4:35) behind-the-scenes featurette and a few Deleted Scenes (6:45).

VIDEO – 4.0/5

This is being a romantic-comedy, or at least a spoof of sorts on the genre, colors are of course bright and does look brilliant in 1080p high-definition resolution. Isn’t it Romantic is presented with a 2.38 widescreen aspect ratio and although detail isn’t amazingly sharp, still looks good especially with some of the close-up shots while some of the more distant shots did lose some of the detail. Otherwise, this is a nice looking, cheerful high-def transfer.

AUDIO – 4.25/5

As with the video, the included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track shines whenever the clichéd rom-com pop music would come in and dialogue levels were clear coming through the center channel. The front and rear channels, outside the music/score, were also utilized for the ambient noises such as the street sounds of “New York City”.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Isn’t it Romantic might not be a great movie but for sure better than I expected, especially given Rebel Wilson actually displayed some charm and wasn’t at all obnoxious like she was in Pitch Perfect 3; this is probably worthy as a rental. The Blu-ray itself has good video/audio transfers but the bonus features were lackluster.
