It’s pretty clear the Scary Movie franchise should’ve remained dead (at least in my eyes), but considering it made a massive $230 million worldwide off of a $30 million budget, we’ll probably get another one down the pike.

Plot synopsis: Cindy (ANA FARIS), Brenda (REGINA HALL), Shorty (MARLON WAYANS), and Ray (SHAWN WILLIAMS) get dragged back into the chaos by a brand-new masked killer who clearly never learned when to quit. Review: The original Scary Movie from 2000 was by no means perfect but it was one of the better spoof movies to come down the pike back then in decades. I still re-watched it every so often and manage to laugh at most of it. Now 26 years later after at best a mix-bag with the sequels (although Scary Movie 5 was the absolute bottom of the barrel). Going in I wasn’t expecting very much as the trailers did nothing for me and frankly I don’t hold the first with some heart-warming nostalgia either. Not only was this unfunny from beginning to end with at best a couple chuckles, but worse it’s just plain dull, lifeless and boring. I’m sure the cast and crew had a blast but as a viewer I just let my mind wander. I will say the production value was at least decent but like the god-awful Friedberg/Seltzer movies (Disaster Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans), there wasn’t blatant green screen used, but like those they just parody one movie to the next with no real transition. The movies they spoof: John Wick, Get Out, Midsommer, Scream 4, Smile and Terrifier and numerous others in between. The jokes in Scary Movie each land with a resounding thud and not even the reunion of Ana Faris and Regina Hall could even come close to make this an enjoyable experience, if any character elicited a laugh was maybe Dave Sheridan as Doofy. In addition, they tout this as having humor that pushes the PC boundaries but even in that regard it’s played pretty safe. The digital copy includes an unrated version that runs 9-minutes longer and there is absolutely no way I’m going endure this a second time. |

Scary Movie at least looks great in 4K. The 2160p high-definition transfers boasts good colors throughout while the black levels are sharp and well defined without appearing crushed nor any signs of artifacts, which is to be expected for a new studio release. |
AUDIO – 4½/5 |

Being a comedy, albeit with minor horror elements, the movie features a strong Dolby Atmos track that outputs the awful and laugh-less jokes that peppers every scene. There is some good depth for some of the surrounds. It’s a solid enough track for the genre. |
