Mortal Kombat II – 4K Ultra HD Review

All in all, Mortal Kombat II is at least a decent enough step up from the 2021 installment and a masterpiece compared to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The addition of Karl Urban as Johnny Cage makes this one entertaining.

THE MOVIE — 3/5

Plot synopsis: Johnny Cage (KARL URBAN) joins other fighters in the ultimate, no-holds-barred battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn (MARTYN FORD), a powerful tyrant who threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.

Quick Hit Review: When I saw the first Mortal Kombat in 2021, while certainly better than Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, it still fell short as a whole, and I still preferred the campiness of the 1995 version. With MK2021 being was enough of a success for the studio, we get Mortal Kombat II and a theatrical release and the result… it was fine.

I found MKII to be mildly entertaining and features a decent enough of a plot to go along with plenty of great references to the video game. The cast, along with those returning from MK2021, we get the introduction of Johnny Cage played by Karl Urban who was a lot of fun in the role. There are not a whole lot of other highlights in terms of the cast although I liked Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

 

SPECIAL FEATURES – 3½/5

This release comes with a glossy slip cover and a redemption code for the Digital HD copy.

There are five featurettes: Mortal Kombat II: Evolving the Saga (6:34), Building the Realms of Mortal Kombat (5:51), Mortal Kombat II: Choose Your Fighter (5:53), Klose Quarters Kombat (6:35) and A “Boom” to Gamers Everywhere (3:11).

While these weren’t terribly comprehensive, you do get insights into the making of this sequel from the story to casting with behind-the-scenes footage.

 

 

VIDEO – 4¾/5

Mortal Kombat II takes stage here presented with a 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and a 2160p high-definition transfer. No real surprise here that this looks great with incredible detail throughout and colors are vibrant and pops off the screen especially set against some of the darker background elements. Black levels were also well balanced and no signs of artifacts or other flaws.

AUDIO – 4¾/5

The included Dolby Atmos mix does sound incredible be it the few more dialogue driven scenes or the numerous fight sequences which does showcase some nice depth via the rear channels with the center speaker outputting clear dialogue or the centralized action.
