Ready Player One was an all around fun and entertaining sci-fi action-adventure from Steven Spielberg that does a wonderful job of throwing nostalgia in your face, but the filmmakers seemed to be having a hell of a time with the material, and the story itself was compelling.
Overall, Truth or Dare was a really dumb movie which would be fine if it had any sense of fun, but like so many of these teen-horror movies that have come before, it lacks any of it. I can’t even recommend this as a rental.
Disobedience never exactly reaches the dramatic heights filmmaker Sebastián Lelio likely wanted, as I didn’t find it all that emotionally absorbing, but the performances from Weisz, McAdams and Nivola are all something to behold.
Traffik was a surprisingly effective thriller though mainly for the performance from its lead, and producer, Paula Patton more so than the writing or attempts at being a message film about sex trafficking, for which there are better films that do a better job.
Rampage is not great yet still a fun and entertaining enough action film that features Dwayne Johnson pretty much playing a similar character to that featured in San Andreas, but still his charisma does go a long way.
Midnight Cowboy for me wasn’t entirely the classic in my eyes, yet still is understandable for its cultural impact and propelled by two incredible performances by Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight, both equally deserving of their Best Actor Academy Award nominations.
The Colossus of Rhodes is an over-long but still fine adventure-drama from director Sergio Leone with some impressive set pieces and solid performances from Rory Calhoun and Lea Massari.
The Addiction is anything but perfect but still a unique take on the vampire subgenre with a terrific performance by Lili Taylor as well as Christopher Walken in his small part.
A Quiet Place isn’t a standout movie on its own, but does have a few standout moments and a few good performances including John Krasinski really coming into his own, leaving behind his character from The Office behind.
Future World is just a poorly made copy of the much superior Mad Max: Fury Road, and even when accounting for a lesser budget, still was pretty bad which is unfortunate considering the cast, which were rather wasted (both in terms of talent and alcohol).
Midnight Sun is just a misfire of a romantic-drama with a plot that’s been seen and done numerous times before in the past several years, though this one is equipped with an especially clichéd script and two leads that don’t quite click.
Super Fly is a well done 1970s blaxploitation flick featuring a funktastic performance from its star, Ron O’Neal whose career unfortunately never truly took off, but here, he’s a lot of fun to watch.
2 Weeks in Another Town is a well done, somewhat inside baseball of Hollywood, and a fine follow-up to The Bad and the Beautiful, that features two well done performances by screen legends Kirk Douglas and Edward G. Robinson.
On the one hand I was disappointed with Escape Plan 2 given how fun the first movie was, on the other I can’t be too surprised given it was DTV/On Demand and is from the Grindstone Entertainment production company.
Blockers is neither great nor bad. There were moments I did genuinely laugh and at its core there is a positive message, though in some respects, the film does re-iterate a few themes from American Pie. The cast were mostly fine, though Ike Barinholtz was perhaps the highlight.
