Taffin had some potential to be a pretty cool crime-drama with a beautiful Irish locale, instead the plot is half-baked, acting so-so at best and not even the charismatic Pierce Brosnan couldn’t make it all that interesting.
Lady Sings the Blues stars Diana Ross as the incredible singer, Billie Holiday, and arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Paramount and includes a featurette and a set of deleted scenes.
The Don is Dead may not be top-shelf in the mafia crime-dramas but the performances for the most part were pretty good, headlined by Anthony Quinn, and some so-so suspenseful scenes, it’s just nothing overly memorable.
Runaway Train is a great suspense-thriller and one of the few success stories from the Canon Group, garnering strong reviews and even two Academy Award nominations for Voight and Roberts.
Crash isn’t a movie I found all that great though my interest was mainly for some of the controversy and honestly as strange as the “plot” and characters were, it’s not that out of bounds at least nowadays.
Fatale isn’t a great movie but I can appreciate the pulpy, neo-nourish elements and nice to see Hilary Swank and Michael Ealy who both give solid performances.
Horizon Line has I guess an interesting premise that was stretched too thin for a feature, and there’s not much here that I enjoyed outside of a couple laughably ridiculous but not enough to give this a recommendation.
Fear of Rain had an interesting concept and if this were some family melodrama, it might’ve worked but throwing in a mystery as an almost side plot, just never quite gelled.
I’m not a big baseball fan but generally enjoy these releases as at the very least you can avoid the commercials or even just watch highlights.
Shogun’s Joy of Torture isn’t a movie for everyone, probably not for me either, as it doesn’t have much substance to offer and forget about much entertainment value.
Hard to Hold is a poorly written romance-drama that at least was made somewhat watchable with the nice chemistry between Rick Springfield and Janet Eilber, though that doesn’t mean both give consistent performances.
Random Acts of Violence, based on the graphic novel, stars Jesse Williams, Jordana Brewster and Jay Baruchel, who co-scripted, produced and directed. The Blu-ray and DVD arrives on February 16th.
Come Play is a simple but effective enough fantasy-horror film that features some nice scenes though I can’t say I was ever quite frightened very much, however I assume young teens might get something out of it.
Baby Doll debuts on Blu-ray courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection receiving a new video restoration and stars Karl Malden, Carroll Baker and Eli Wallach and is out February 16th.
The Man from Hong Kong may not be a top notch 1970s martial arts film and its star doesn’t have the charisma of a Bruce Lee but I had a good old time and some of the fights and stunt work was respectable.
