Lavalantula is the latest SyFy Original Movie trying to capitalize on the Sharknado trend hoping something else will catch on. One thing I will say about this one, it’s not quite as fun as Sharknado but it has some moments and its nice seeing Steve Guttenberg in the lead…

PLOT SYNOPSIS

After a dormant volcano erupts in the Santa Monica Hills, arachnid-like creatures swarm out. A former A-list action star, Colton West (STEVE GUTTENBERG), finds himself the hero responsible for saving the city from being victim to the most horrifying creatures imaginable.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.0/5

This release comes with a glossy slip cover. As for features, there’s a generic promotional Featurette (3:09) and a Trailer (1:52).

VIDEO – 4.0/5 | AUDIO – 3.5/5

Lavalantula is presented with an anamorphic widescreen transfer, 1.78 aspect ratio, and looks decent enough with bright colors and no major instances of artifacting or aliasing.

The included Dolby Digital 5.1 track is effective enough but is rather flat during the action-packed scenes. However, dialogue comes through well enough and considering its made-for-TV source, it’s not too bad.

OVERALL – 2.0/5

Overall, Lavalantula is the latest SyFy Original Movie trying to capitalize on the Sharknado trend hoping something else will catch on. One thing I will say about this one, it’s not quite as fun as Sharknado but it has some moments and its nice seeing Steve Guttenberg in the lead… The DVD released by Alchemy is basic with good video, so-so audio and only one promotional featurette.
