A Dog’s Purpose is a schmaltzy and oft manipulative family fantasy drama that features a few decent performances, including Dennis Quaid, but honestly, even as a dog lover, I found the film to be tedious to sit through especially having to constantly listens to Josh Gad’s annoying voice-over.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

A devoted dog (voiced by JOSH GAD) discovers the meaning of its own existence through the lives of the humans it teaches to laugh and love. Reincarnated as multiple canines over the course of five decades, the lovable pooch develops an unbreakable bond with a kindred spirit named Ethan (BRYCE GHEISAR). As the boy grows older (KJ APA/DENNIS QUAID) and comes to a crossroad, the dog once again comes back into his life to remind him of his true self.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.0/5

This release comes with a semi-glossy, title-embossed, slip cover. Inside is a DVD Copy along with the Digital HD redemption code.

Deleted Scenes (9:24; HD) – There are 15 scenes that were cut down or removed, presumably for pacing issues. As you can see based on the running time, most are quite short.

Outtakes (2:11; HD) – Contains some extra scenes, many involving the dogs playing around.

Lights, Camera, Woof! (8:46; HD) – This is a behind-the-scenes featurette introducing viewers to the dogs featured.

A Writer’s Purpose (4:44; HD) looks at the book that was the basis for the movie and the cast gushing over it.

VIDEO – 4.75/5

A Dog’s Purpose runs onto Blu-ray presented with a 1080p high-definition transfer and in its original 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio. The picture is what you would expect from a family-friendly venture with bright colors throughout and, as with newer movies, sharp and well-defined detail while not showing any cases of artifacting, aliasing or other flaws.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

The disc comes with a basic but fine DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. The bulk of the movie is either dialogue driven or filled with a dramatic score (by composer Rachel Portman). There’s some modest depth here and there but it’s a flat lossless track that is adequate enough.

OVERALL – 2.5/5

Overall, A Dog’s Purpose is a schmaltzy and oft manipulative family fantasy drama that features a few decent performances, including Dennis Quaid, but honestly, even as a dog lover, I found the film to be tedious to sit through especially having to constantly listens to Josh Gad’s annoying voice-over. This Blu-ray released by Universal has good video/audio transfers but the features are thin.
