Eraser 4K Ultra HD Review

Eraser is not one that will be remembered in Schwarzenegger’s filmography though it’s hardly his worst outing either, and as it is, the movie is certainly watchable and entertaining way to pass 115 minutes.

THE MOVIE — 3½/5

Plot Synopsis: John “The Eraser” Kruger (ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER) is the top gun in the US Marshall Witness Protection scheme; he erases their past and deals with their future. His latest assignment is whistle-blower Dr. Lee Cullen (VANESSA WILLIAMS), who has evidence against a major arms corporation that’s selling weapons to terrorists with the collusion of rogue enemy agents within, but there is danger nearer home for Kruger, from within his own department.

Quick Hit Review: Eraser is a film I’ve seen a few times over the years. While certainly entertaining this is one of Arnold’s lesser endeavors, to the point it felt like he was never intended for the role and some of his attributes was changed to suit him, most notably his one-liners that felt forced rather than humorous. Still, the action sequence during the finale was fun and for his part, James Caan made for an over-the-top 90s villain. Vanessa Williams was fine with a far too perfect character with no flaws and I always enjoyed seeing James Coburn show up even if it’s a thankless part.

Eraser was directed by Chuck Russell, the filmmaker behind A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, The Blob (1988), The Mask and The Scorpion King and he’s the epitome of a serviceable director, nothing really stands out in any sort of style and someone who probably gets along with studios to deliver a project on time. Eraser isn’t anything special but a fine time-waster.

VIDEO – 4½/5

Eraser marks its debut onto 4K Ultra HD presented in its original 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and a 2160p high-definition transfer. This is a pretty good looking picture with sharp detail and colors fairly vibrant for the daylight scenes while black levels are stark without elements being lost.

AUDIO – 5/5

The movie comes equipped with a strong Dolby Atmos track that is an upgrade over the previous Blu-ray’s Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. Dialogue comes across with good clarity but where this really comes to life is during the action sequence at the end.

OVERALL — 3¾/5

Eraser is not one that will be remembered in Schwarzenegger’s filmography though it’s hardly his worst outing either, and as it is, the movie is certainly watchable and entertaining way to pass 115 minutes.
