Shooter is a film that works with Mark Wahlberg’s strengths as an action hero and combined with the fine direction by Antoine Fuqua makes this worth checking out if you hadn’t already in the 15 years since the release.

Paramount provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post.
The opinions I share are my own.

THE MOVIE — 3½/5 |
Plot Synopsis: A top Marine sniper, Bob Lee Swagger (MARK WAHLBERG), leaves the military after a mission goes awry and disappears without a trace. Swagger is coaxed back into service after high-profile government officials convince him to help thwart a plot against the President of the United States. Swagger realizes he has been betrayed and becomes the target of a nationwide manhunt. Instead of hiding, he seeks revenge against some of the most powerful and corrupt leaders in the free world.
Quick Hit Review: Shooter, released in 2007, was a film I found to be entertaining but nothing overly special. Having recently now re-watched it and… well my opinion remains the same. Mark Wahlberg is solid in the lead and the film does have some decent action sequences alongside a respectable supporting cast led by Danny Glover and Ned Beatty in villainous roles. But otherwise this isn’t top tier government-thrillers with the likes of The Bourne Identity instead more akin to The Bourne Legacy, which is also a film I quite enjoyed but paled in comparison to its predecessors. Shooter was directed by Antoine Fuqua, whose resume includes The Replacement Killers (an adequate action-thriller that I recently re-watched), The Equalizer and Training Day, does a good job with the action sequences and at the very least keeps the pace at a good rate. This may not be terribly memorable but worth watching especially on a lazy Saturday. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 2½/5 |
This release comes housed in a Steelbook case and inside is a redemption code for the Digital HD copy. All of the features are on the 4K disc as there is no Blu-ray disc included. In addition, the commentary track by Antoine Fuqua for some reason was not ported over from the DVD or Blu-ray releases. In any case, what we get is Survival of the Fittest: The Making of Shooter (21:49) behind-the-scenes featurette; Independence Hall (7:20) featurette on one of the key sequences filmed in Philadelphia; and last some Deleted Scenes (11:50). |
VIDEO – 4¾/5, AUDIO – 4½/5 |
Paramount releases Shooter onto 4K Ultra HD for the first time, presented in the original 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 2160p high-definition transfer. For the most part this is a great looking video, detail is sharp throughout and colors appear vibrant throughout without appearing overly bright or saturated, with some aid via the HDR. The disc comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which is an upgrade from the 2007 Blu-ray and its Dolby Digital 5.1 track. In any case, this is a fine sounding lossless audio, dialogue coming through the center speaker with clarity and the action sequences providing some good depth for the front and rear channels and the LFE kicking in to give it a modest boost. |
