Plot Synopsis: Tell Me a Story takes the world’s most beloved fairy tales and reimagines them as a dark and twisted psychological thriller. Set in modern-day New York City, the first season of this serialized drama interweaves The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel into an epic and subversive tale of love, loss, greed, revenge, and murder.
Review: In the vein of American Horror Story, this is more of the crime-thriller version with a little bit of a spin of Once Upon a Time. I’ve never really heard of this show prior until I realized that it one of CBS All Access series, which does lend to having more leeway in the material (language, violence, sex, all the good stuff). In any case, created by Kevin Williamson (writer of Scream and creator behind The Vampire Diaries amongst others), Tell Me a Story has some entertaining storylines through its binge-friendly 10-epsidoes. The acting is pretty standard for a series of this sort, nothing groundbreaking and no real star-makers (though Danielle Campbell from Prom and The Originals is a knockout) but you do get the usual attractive sort while the production values were relatively impressive all things considered. I won’t say I was completely in love with the show but the concept is fun at the very least. Episodes:

Paramount releases Tell Me a Story onto DVD presented with a 16×9 enhanced widescreen measured at 2.37 aspect ratio. For the most part the show looks pretty good, it is darkly lit but there are some colors that come through. The episodes come accompanied with Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks which were fairly impressive with good surrounds, as evidenced in the first episode with a downpour while dialogue comes though with fine clarity. |
