With the success of the Barbershop movies, and with at the time Queen Latifah’s growing fame following her Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in Chicago, it’s no surprise there would be a spin-off with Beauty Shop which had a good heart at its core.

PLOT SYNOPSIS |
When Jorge (KEVIN BACON), the egotistical boss at a posh salon, pushes his star stylist, Gina (QUEEN LATIFAH), a hair too far, Gina leaves and opens a beauty shop of her own. Inheriting an opinionated group of stylists, a colorful clientele and a sexy upstairs neighbor, Gina proves that you can’t keep a good woman down — and you can’t keep a shopful of women speaking their minds. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.25/5 |
This release comes with a matted slip cover. Features on this are lighter compared to the two Barbershop movies and include a Select Scene Audio Commentary with Billie Woodruff, Beauty Shop: Inside the Style (15:00) featurette, Beauty Shop: Sneak Peek (5:46), a Gag Reel (5:51), and the Theatrical Trailer (0:57). |
VIDEO – 3.75/5 |
Beauty Shop takes a seat and gossips about the Blu-ray, presented with a 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. While it’s likely MVD received this as is from Fox/MGM, so it didn’t undergo any kind of clean-up, the picture doesn’t look too bad. It is fairly clean, colors are generally vibrant and detail was halfway respectable but hardly amazing. |
AUDIO – 3.75/5 |
The included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track isn’t incredible yet still serviceable considering the bulk of the audio is dialogue with some minor depth for the soundtrack and score, and there were no discernible hisses or pops. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
With the success of the Barbershop movies, and with at the time Queen Latifah’s growing fame following her Academy Award nomination for her supporting role in Chicago, it’s no surprise there would be a spin-off with Beauty Shop which had a good heart at its core. |
