PLOT SYNOPSIS
|
Three strong-willed women (LAURA DERN, KRISTEN STEART, MICHELLE WILLIAMS) strive to forge their own paths amidst the wide-open plains of the American Northwest: a lawyer who finds herself contending with both office sexism and a hostage situation with a client (JARED HARRIS); a wife and mother whose determination to build her dream home puts her at odds with the men in her life; and a young law student who forms an ambiguous bond with a lonely ranch hand. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.25/5 |
This release comes housed in a clear HD Keep Case. Not much in terms of features, but there are Interviews with Writer/Director Kelly Reichardt (14:13), Producer Todd Haynes (14:35) and Author Maile Meloy (13:12). Also included is the Theatrical Trailer (2:00; HD). |
VIDEO – 4.0/5 |
Certain Women arrives on Blu-ray from The Criterion Collection and is presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. For the most part, detail isn’t at all bad but the noise levels in some shots were quite drastic, not entirely sure, but perhaps it was more noticeable for the darker scenes. Otherwise, it is free of artifacts, aliasing and other flaws. |
AUDIO – 3.25/5 |
The included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is serviceable but low key. The bulk of the film is either strictly dialogue or quieter moments with very little, if any, depth. I found this to be more centrally located in terms of the sound with only minor ambient noises coming from the front and rear speakers. |
OVERALL – 3.0/5 |
Overall, Certain Women is a fine independent quasi-ensemble-interconnected ensemble that features some wonderful performances by Laura Dern, Michelle Williams, Kristen Stewart and Lily Gladstone. Meanwhile, this Criterion Collection release isn’t the best but does have good, albeit noise-heavy, video, adequate audio and some interesting interviews. |
