The Climber was an interesting little Italian flick and features a fun performance by lead Joe Dallesandro and although I wasn’t fully involved with the crime-thriller centric story, no doubt any fan of Italian cinema might find it at least interesting.

The Climber follows in the tradition of gangster classics such as The Public Enemy and Scarface as it charts the rise and inevitable fall of small-time smuggler Aldo (JOE DALLESANDRO). Beaten and abandoned by the local gang boss after he tries to skim off some profits for himself, Aldo farms his own group of misfits in order to exact revenge. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5 |
This release comes with a new Interview (28:39; HD) with actor Joe Dallesandro, discussing his career during the ‘70s and ‘80s. Also included inside is a 15-page booklet. |
VIDEO – 4.5/5 |
Arrow Video releases The Climber onto Blu-ray presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer culled from the 35mm camera negative and scanned at 4K resolution. Accordingly, restoration was done with the removal of thousands of instances of dust marks, scratches and other flaws… and it shows. The picture actually is pleasant looking with good and well defined detail and while it’s not very colorful, even daylight scenes are darkly lit, it’s still an impressive transfer. |
AUDIO – 4.0/5 |
The audio also received some work done. The Italian/English PCM Mono track includes clear dialogue levels and the 1970s era music blares through quite well, though, as the booklet notes, there are synchronization issues as the soundtrack was recorded in post production. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
Overall, The Climber was an interesting little Italian flick and features a fun performance by lead Joe Dallesandro and although I wasn’t fully involved with the crime-thriller centric story, no doubt any fan of Italian cinema might find it at least interesting. This Arrow Video release offers up great video and audio transfers though the features (one feature) was decent if only to hear from Dallesandro today reflecting on his career. |
