THE MOVIE — 3.75/5

Plot Synopsis: Three brilliant African-American women at NASA — Katherine Johnson (TARAJI P. HENSON), Dorothy Vaughan (OCTAVIA SPENCER) and Mary Jackson (JANELLE MONAE) — serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn (GLEN POWELL) into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race and galvanized the world.

Quick Hit Review: Hidden Figures, directed by Theodore Melfi (St. Vincent) from Margot Lee Shetterly’s novel, is a delightful film telling a generally unknown story about three black women who were crucial to the USA’s journey to space; it features three solid performances led way by Taraji P. VIDEO – 4.0/5

Fox releases Hidden Figures onto Blu-ray presented in its original 2.39 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. Colors here look bright and brilliant throughout with sharp and well defined detail. Not quite reference quality yet still looks excellent on the small big screen.

AUDIO – 4.5/5

Here we have another release that gets a 7.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio track which, for a drama anyway, is a bit of an overkill given this is a dialogue-heavy film but there is at least a little depth when the soundtrack, including Hans Zimmer’s score and Pharrell Williams’ songs come on, and the rear channels are mainly reserved for ambient noises as well.

OVERALL – 4.0/5

Overall, Hidden Figures is a delightful film telling a generally unknown story about three black women who were crucial to the USA’s journey to space; it features three solid performances led way by Taraji P. Henson. The Blu-ray released by Fox offers great video and audio transfers and some fine bonus features.
