20th Century Women is a fine ensemble drama with some great performances, namely by Annette Bening and Greta Gerwig with a compelling enough story. The Blu-ray released by Lionsgate offers up good video and audio transfers and some so-so bonus material.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Set in 1979 Santa Barbara, 20th Century Women follows Dorothea Fields (ANNETTE BENING), a single mother raising her adolescent son, Jamie (LUCAS JADE ZUMANN), at a time brimming with cultural change. Dorothea enlists the help of two younger women — Abbie (GRETA GERWIG), a punk artist boarding in the Field’s home; and Julie (ELLE FANING), a savvy teenage neighbor. Along with William (BILLY CRUDUP), a bohemian handyman who also rooms in Dorothea’s house, they farm a makeshift family that inspires them for the rest of their lives.

VIDEO – 3.75/5

20th Century Women arrives on Blu-ray through Lionsgate and is presented with a 2.00 widescreen aspect ratio and an AVC-encoded, 1080p high-definition transfer. This might quite be a reference quality video but as dramas go, this one does feature bright colors while detail was relatively sharp throughout.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

The disc includes your standard but effective DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. This isn’t exactly robust lossless track or anything but dialogue levels did come through the center channel fairly nicely and any depth, such as the choice music for the 1970s era, made good usage of the rear speakers.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, 20th Century Women is a fine ensemble drama with some great performances, namely by Annette Bening and Greta Gerwig with a compelling enough story. The Blu-ray released by Lionsgate offers up good video and audio transfers and some so-so bonus material.
