Me Before You is a film adaptation that attempted to capitalize on the massive success of The Fault in Our Stars not to mention it’s the latest rom-drama in the vein of a Nicolas Sparks adaption sans an overabundance of sappiness, though the heavy-handedness doesn’t quite mesh with some of the more levity of light-hearted scenes that came before.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Sometimes love takes you where you never expected to go. Louisa “Lou” Clark (EMILIA CLARKE) lives in the English countryside. Her normally cheery outlook is put to the test when she faces her newest career challenge: as caregiver and companion to Will Traynor (SAM CLAFLIN). Now wheelchair-bound from an accident, Will has all but given up. That is, until Lou determines to show him that life is worth living. Embarking on a series of adventures, both Lou and Will get more than they bargained for, and find their lives – and hearts – changing in ways neither one could have imagined.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5

Given the movie made $180M worldwide (on a $20M budget), it’s surprising to see what little effort Warner put into this release. No slip cover was included but there was a redemption code for the Digital HD copy.

Me Before You: From Page to Screen (5:40; HD) outlines the process of adapting the novel to the big screen and features interviews with members of the cast and crew.

Deleted Scenes (6:11; HD) – There are a couple scenes included here but nothing of import.

Outtakes (2:15; HD)

VIDEO – 4.0/5

Me Before You comes to Blu-ray through Warner Home Video presented in its original theatrical 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer (AVC codec). As one would think, this romantic drama (and some comedy) has bright colors throughout which has a nice pop off the small screen and skin tones appear natural and detail looks sharp throughout. It’s nothing special but still nice enough to look at.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 fairs about the same as the video. Dialogue levels at least do sound crisp and clear but the bulk of the depth comes courtesy of either Craig Armstrong’s score or the choice pop music that fitted a specific scene. The lossless track is hardly robust but adequate enough for the time being.

OVERALL – 2.5/5

Overall, Me Before You is a film adaptation that attempted to capitalize on the massive success of The Fault in Our Stars not to mention it’s the latest rom-drama in the vein of a Nicolas Sparks adaption sans an overabundance of sappiness, though the ending for this movie has been controversial and doesn’t quite mesh with some of the more levity of light-hearted scenes that came before. Still, the two lead performances weren’t half bad… The Blu-ray released through Warner offers decent audio/video transfers but the features are lacking.
