Big Sur is a solid drama featuring great performances, particularly from Jean-Marc Barr while the cinematography and score are both absolutely beautiful. The DVD released by Ketchup Entertainment is pretty minimal with good audio/video transfers but limited in the bonus feature arena.

THE MOVIE

Plot Outline: An adaptation of American literary icon Jack Kerouac’s novel of the same name, Big Sur focuses on a moment in Kerouac’s (played by JEAN-MARC BARR in Lars von Tier’s upcoming Nymphomaniac) life when, overwhelmed by the success of his opus “On the Road” and struggling to battle inner demons, he seeks respite in three brief sojourns in a cabin in the small, coastal California town of Big Sur.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0.5/5

Other than the Theatrical Trailer (1:43), there are no other features.

VIDEO – 4.0/5

Big Sur arrives on DVD presented with a 16×9 enhanced widescreen aspect ratio and thanks to the cinematography by M. David Mullen (Jennifer’s Body), this standard-def DVD actually looks really good with bright colors.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

The Dolby Digital 5.1 track offered up has clear dialogue levels with the front and rear speakers being used for composers Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner and Kubilay Uner’s poignant score. Also noticeable is the sounds of nature from the ocean to the forest, although hardly dynamic, it’s more than satisfactory.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, Big Sur is a solid drama featuring great performances, particularly from Jean-Marc Barr while the cinematography and score are both absolutely beautiful. The DVD released by Ketchup Entertainment is pretty minimal with good audio/video transfers but limited in the bonus feature arena.
