THE MOVIE
Plot Outline: In The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, animation/special effects genius Ray Harryhausen gives us another installment in the adventures of Sinbad (JOHN PHILLIP LAW), the swashbuckling sailor here pitted against the nefarious master of the black arts, Koura (TOM BAKER). As the two race to find a magical treasure trove, Sinbad must confront a host of astonishing creatures, including a wee winged homunculus, a one-eyed centaur, and a six-armed, scimitar-wielding deity, the dreaded Kali.
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5
The disc is housed in a standard Blu-ray case and contains 6-page booklet with an essay by Julie Kirgo. The features here have little, if anything, to do with Golden Voyage…
Mysterious Island Featurette (11:13; SD) is a vintage interview with Harryhausen and adapting “Mysterious Island” to feature film, recounting on-set/location stories and such.
3 Worlds of Gulliver Featurette (7:12; SD) covers the film 3 Worlds of Gulliver with Harryhausen once again leading audiences through the process of making it.
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (11:52; SD) is about the 1956 sci-fi film where Harryhausen, with Joe Dante, discuss the picture.
Also included is the Theatrical Trailer (2:47) and the Isolated Score Track.
VIDEO – 4.5/5
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Twilight Time and once again they have released very nice transfer to another and often forgotten/obscure film. The detail levels are excellent and, especially, colors appear vibrant. Although there are a few minor specs of dirt, this is a clean transfer with natural film grain.
I should note that the back cover states it is a 1.85 aspect ratio, it is in fact the correct 1.66 AR…
AUDIO – 4.0/5
The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track is moderately dynamic with the bulk of the main action being a bit front-loaded while Miklos Rozsa’s adventurous score rounds out the side and rear channels giving it a mostly fulfilling lossless track to a movie that has never sounded better.
OVERALL – 3.5/5
Overall, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad is yet another solid release by Twilight Time and a coup for fans of the fantasy series. The video and audio transfers are both excellent and clear upgrades over any previous releases; the only downside is the features are limited with none of the three featurettes dealing with the movie itself.
