Supergirl – 4K Ultra HD Review

Supergirl is hardly bad but it is lackluster despite it being a good looking film. Milly Alcock was okay in the lead but I had higher hopes for her when she was first announced.

THE MOVIE — 3/5

Plot synopsis: When a brutal and unyielding enemy hits dangerously close to home, Supergirl (MILLY ALCOCK) is forced into an uneasy alliance with an improbable ally (EVE RIDLEY) as she embarks on a journey in pursuit of justice and revenge.

Quick Hit Review: With the newly formed DCU under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, last year’s Superman was a fun and mild success and did a decent job setting up the universe. Now with the second feature film, Supergirl, I had some anticipation as I like Milly Alcock and her cameo at the end of Superman did provide something different than the other live action iterations.

Now with her taking center stage, I felt while Alcock looked the part and fills the suit quite well, I had no feelings towards her, her plight or anything else in the film, including the villain who’s as bland as any of the lessers in the MCU. The villain, named Krem and played by Matthias Schoenaerts (Amsterdam), is so one-dimensional that while has a interesting look, he’s just evil with no depth whatsoever. Eve Ridley for her part was fine and not entirely obnoxious that often these young characters are. But like Alcock she makes little impression in the end.

The plot itself is simple and while there have been plenty of criticisms aimed at it, I actually don’t mind a simpler story and no world-ending element at the core. Instead we get the cute pooch Krypto’s life in danger as he’s infected with a poison from a dart shot by Krem. Normally pets in danger or dying strikes a chord in my heart but this part did nothing.

And that’s the crux of Supergirl, the parts were there and it looked good (I thought the visual effects weren’t too bad), but it lacked any passion and just an empty vessel though it is at least mildly entertaining.

VIDEO – 5/5

Supergirl flies onto the screen and is presented with a 2.39 widescreen aspect ratio and a 2160p high-definition transfer. Having seen this in theaters, and on the Cinemark ScreenX format, I can say this pretty much matches in terms of the colors which are generally vibrant while the black levels are stark without appearing crushed. Detail is sharp and well defined throughout.

AUDIO – 4¾/5

The included Dolby Atmos track brings the space action-adventure to life with great depth alongside the clear and crisp dialogue. Not quite reference quality or anything but still impressive though expected for a high-budget modern Hollywood release.

OVERALL — 3¼/5

Supergirl is hardly bad but it is lackluster despite it being a good looking film. Milly Alcock was okay in the lead but I had higher hopes for her when she was first announced. At the very least it is worth a watch but doubtful you’ll remember anything about it a week later.
