Vacation is a movie that I’ve seen numerous times and it still manages to make me laugh. In regards to this 4K UHD release, the video transfer is adequate but hardly amazing and the hour-long documentary is missing.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post.
The opinions I share are my own.

THE MOVIE — 4/5

Plot Synopsis: The Griswolds are going on vacation. In the driver’s seat is Clark Griswold (CHEVY CHASE), an everyman eager to share the open road and the wonders of family togetherness with his long-suffering wife Ellen (BEVERLY D’ANGELO) and their two frustrated teens (ANTHONY MICHAEL HALL, DANA BARRON). After myriad mishaps; 2460 miles; and a run-in with a hapless security guard (JOHN CANDY), it’s a wonder the Griswolds are still together. There’s never been a family vacation like it.

Quick Hit Review: National Lampoon’s Vacation is another 1980s comedy classic that never gets old after numerous of viewings over the years. Chevy Chase shows is comedic prowess alongside Beverly D’Angelo, Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron with so many memorable scenes, a couple hilarious dark ones (i.e. the poor pooch and Aunt Edna’s demise). It’s a fun time all around classic directed by Harold Ramis with a script written by the legendary John Hughes.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1½/5

This release comes with a matted slip cover and inside a redemption code for the Digital HD copy.

Unfortunately no Blu-ray disc and the only feature on the 4K disc is the Audio Commentary by Director Harold Ramis & Actors Chevy Chase, Randy Quaid, Anthony Michael Hall and Dana Barron & Producer Matty Simmons. The hour-long making-of documentary is not here…

VIDEO – 4/5, AUDIO – 4¼/5

Warner Bros. goes on a trip with Vacation making its debut on 4K Ultra HD. The movie is presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 2160p high-definition transfer. The picture here does look decent and likely a decent enough upgrade over the Blu-ray, however can’t quite say it was a significant difference, at least at this price. The detail was fairly sharp and well defined while colors are nicely balanced with the natural film grain and noise has been retained giving it a nice texture. I didn’t really notice any major flaws outside some specs here and there but this was an otherwise serviceable transfer.

The included DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track is likely the same as the 2013 Blu-ray release. This offers up clear dialogue and okay depth when the music kicks on. This lossless track isn’t anything extraordinary but more than serviceable especially for a comedy.

OVERALL — 3/5

Vacation is a movie that I’ve seen numerous times and it still manages to make me laugh. In regards to this 4K UHD release, the video transfer is adequate but hardly amazing and the hour-long documentary is missing.
