Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons isn’t a great animated movie nor does it really move the needle in terms of storytelling but the animation was solid and I was entertained throughout.

Plot Synopsis: Ahhhh, to be young…and charged with saving the world from impending doom! That’s the burden that 11-year-old Jonathan Kent and reluctant young sidekick Damian Wayne face in this all-new DC Animated Movie. On his birthday, Jonathan Kent learns his dad is Superman and that he has latent superpowers of his own! He also meets the legendary Dark Knight and current Boy Wonder, Damian. But when the two boys are forced to team up to protect their loved ones from a hostile alien force, will they become the Super Sons they’re destined to be?
Quick Hit Review: Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons is the latest entry with DC’s Animation line and far as I can tell not based (even loosely) on previously written material and, as I found out during my research, is the first fully CGI animated movie from DC. The animation itself was pretty good while the voice acting from Jack Dylan Grazer (Freddy from Shazam) and Jack Griffo were both solid while I wasn’t totally sold on Travis Willingham or Troy Baker as Superman and Batman respectively, but assuming they are one-offs and both are supporting characters, it’s not a huge knock against the movie. In terms of story, it is pretty thin but does make for a quick and entertaining viewing and the inclusion of Starro as the main villain was cool, although probably would’ve been better if we hadn’t already seen it in The Suicide Squad only a year ago. But still, makes for a solid antagonist and one you could believe two rather inexperienced heroes like Jonathan and Damian could take down. And as a side, at least Damian here was bearable and not just a snot-nosed brat.

4K VIDEO – 4½/5, BLU-RAY VIDEO – 4½/5 |

Warner Bros. releases Battle of the Super Sons onto 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray where it’s shown with a 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and given 2160p and 1080p high-definition transfers, respectively. These don’t generally benefit from 4K, at least the past ones from DC, and in this case, while it does look good, I can’t say it’s a significant difference compared with the Blu-ray, perhaps a tad sharper (at least in my testing). In any case, both show well balanced black levels and colors have some vibrancy especially with the blues and reds in Superman and Jonathan’s suits. |
AUDIO – 4½/5 |

Both formats come with a strong DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which outputs clear dialogue and some good depth for the various action scenes and sequences to go along with the energetic score and soundtrack. |
