Save Yourself is a well done horror thriller that’s nothing I’d call incredible but as indie horror goes, it’s really worth a rental (and is currently available for free on Amazon Prime).

THE MOVIE — 3.0/5

Plot Synopsis: Five young women — Kim (JESSICA CAMERON), Sasha (TIANNA NORI), Dawn (LARA MRKOCI), Lizzy (CALEIGH LE GRAND) and Crystal (TRISTAN RISK) — head to L.A. to screen their horror film. But after a stopover at a rest stop, they may never be heard from again. One by one, they enter a bloody battle for survival at the hands of a deranged couple (RY BARRETT, ELMA BEGOVIC), hell bent on using them for their mysterious research. Who will survive and what becomes of their ultimate discovery?

Quick Hit Review: Save Yourself is a fairly well made indie horror film featuring some solid performances, most notably Tianna Nori and Tristan Risk, and an outlandish but still fun plot involving Nazi experimentation. There’s nothing especially memorable, however, but under the direction of Ryan M. Andrews (who also co-scripted), it was at least competently made. This is probably worthy of a rental.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 3.5/5

This release comes with an Audio Commentary with Co-Writer/Director Ryan M. Andrews, Actor Ry Barrett and Director of Photography Michael Jari Davidson; a lengthy Behind-the-Scenes (31:16) featurette showing how the movie was made in only 12 days; Creating Save Yourself (12:02) is a more general behind-the-scenes featurette; and lastly there is the Teaser Trailer (0:50) and the Official Trailer (2:07).

VIDEO – 3.75/5, AUDIO – 4.25/5

Save Yourself is presented with a 16×9 enhanced 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio (measures to 2.43) and despite being dark in tone, the picture does look bright enough to where you can actually see what is going on (pro tip to other horror films of this ilk). The disc comes with both serviceable 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital tracks.

OVERALL – 3.25/5

Overall, Save Yourself is a well done horror thriller that’s nothing I’d call incredible but as indie horror goes, it’s really worth a rental (and is currently available for free on Amazon Prime).
