Barbershop is a fun enough ensemble comedy that actually shows some depth for Ice Cube unlike some of this crappy family adventure fare.

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Calvin (ICE CUBE) is a would-be entrepreneur with big plans and running his family’s barbershop isn’t one of them. But when he impulsively sells the shop to a shady loan shark (KEITH DAVID), he soon realizes just how important the neighborhood parlor is to him and just how far he’ll go to get it back.

The Final Cut (19:27) – This behind-the-scenes featurette has some on-set interviews with the cast and filmmakers discussing the importance of the barbershop for the African American community.
Set, Press and Style (6:04) is on the production design.
Finishing Touches (5:59) goes into the costume design.
Hairdos and Don’ts (7:01) examines the hair style phases from real-life barbers as well as the cast in press interviews.

Deleted Scenes (6:42) – There 7 scenes that didn’t make the cut (no pun intended). Optional commentary with Tim Story.

Also included are Bloopers & Outtakes (4:53), Barber Banter (2:39) featurette on what is talked about in barbershops, a Behind the Scenes Photo Gallery (1:56), a Music Video (5:13) for “Trade it All” by Fabolous featuring P. Diddy and Jagged Edge, and the Theatrical Trailer (2:13).

VIDEO – 3.75/5

Barbershop is presented with a 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture doesn’t at all look bad especially for a 16 year old film that likely didn’t receive any kind of restoration and since it is a comedy. Detail is decent, colors are generally bright and is fairly clean with only some minor dust marks.

AUDIO – 3.5/5

The disc includes a DTS-HD MA 5.1 track (and alternate PCM stereo track) and outputs clear dialogue and some modest depth for the generic score and soundtrack. Nothing phenomenal but still serviceable.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, Barbershop is a fun enough ensemble comedy that actually shows some depth for Ice Cube unlike some of this crappy family adventure fare. The Blu-ray itself has good video/audio transfers and an okay selection of bonus material.
