Super Troopers 2 might’ve been a passion project for the many fans of the 2001 film that garnered cult status over the course of a decade, but for someone who only felt so-so about that one, this sequel was, most of the time, painfully unfunny.

Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-ray I reviewed in this Blog Post.
The opinions I share are my own.

THE MOVIE — 1.5/5

Plot Synopsis: Fired for their previous shenanigans, former Vermont Highway Patrol officers Thorny (JAY CHANDRASEKHAR), Farva, Rabbit (KEVIN HEFFERMAN), Foster (PAUL SOTER) and Mac (STEVE LEMME) get a shot at redemption from Capt. O’Hagan (BRIAN COX) and Gov. Jessan (LYNDA CARTER). The madcap quintet must provide law enforcement for a French Canadian town that’s transitioning to U.S. sovereignty. Their unconventional methods soon get put to the test when they encounter a smarmy mayor, mischievous Mounties, a smuggling ring and a 1,300-pound bear.

Quick Hit Review: Full disclosure, I’m not steeped in the history of Broken Lizard and only somewhat even remember the first Super Troopers, and even then never found all to be anything great or memorable outside of some of the quotes. So, with that said, sitting down to watch the much anticipated sequel, mostly funded through Indie Go Go by the fans, Super Troopers 2 manages to elicit a couple chuckles, the majority during the opening sequence, but otherwise I found this to be a dreadfully unfunny film with predictable jokes.

I suppose if you’re a big fan of the first, Super Troopers 2 just might hit the right note for you, for this casual watcher, and someone who hasn’t seen any of the other Broken Lizard films, I found it difficult to sit through and have zero desire to ever revisit.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 3.0/5

This release comes with a semi-glossy slip cover and inside is a redemption code for the Digital HD copy.

(making) Super Troopers 2 (39:50; HD) is a behind-the-scenes featurette on the long process on getting this sequel off the ground and includes interviews with the cast talking about getting these characters back together.

Extended/Deleted Scenes (19:40; HD) – There’s a massive 21 scenes either removed or cut down, although given their improving, probably not too surprising.

Kevin Hefferman: Method Actor (1:50; HD) is a joke featurette on the actor and thoughts from his fellow cast members.

Also included is the Red Band Teaser (1:03; HD) and Red Band Trailer (2:20; HD).

VIDEO – 4.5/5

Super Troopers 2 is presented in its original theatrical 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer which does look great. Detail is relatively sharp and being a comedy, colors are generally bright throughout with some decent pop to them.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

The included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is more than serviceable, most of the audio outputs the “jokes” (dialogue) with good clarity and when there is action, such as when the tour bus is being chased by state troopers or the action-filled finale with its gunfire, there is some okay depth thanks to the front and rear channels.

OVERALL – 2.0/5

Overall, Super Troopers 2 might’ve been a passion project for the many fans of the 2001 film that garnered cult status over the course of a decade, but for someone who only felt so-so about that one, this sequel was, most of the time, painfully unfunny. The Blu-ray release offers up good video and audio transfers and some okay bonus material.
