Acrimony is hardly terrible but it’s also par for the course of a Tyler Perry film. The talents of the lovely Taraji P. Henson are utterly wasted as she doesn’t get to show anything other than hostility considering any nice moments of the character went to the younger version.

Plot Synopsis: Melinda (AJIONA ALEXUS/TARAJI P. HENSON) meets Robert (ANTONIO MADISON/LYRIQ BENT) in college, soon fall in love and despite his cheating and her bouts of rage/insanity, the two marry. It only goes downhill from there. The end. Quick Hit Review: I can’t say I was ever angry while watching Acrimony, but it was tedious to sit through, mostly for the melodramatic aspects, a story that more belonged on the Lifetime Network, but also two main characters I honestly didn’t care about, even finding either them remotely enjoyable to watch. I didn’t feel empathy for Melinda or pity for Robert. Both characters were just unlikeable and not in that entertaining sort of way, that’s not to mention the obnoxious side characters who more of an annoyance than anything.
Probably because he’s not my cup of tea, I can’t say I’ve liked any of Tyler Perry’s movies, be it comedy or melodrama. His latest in the latter is Acrimony, a new take on the Fatal Attraction scorned-woman genre and despite having the talent of Taraji P. Henson, the film is lifeless, often dull and a bloated affair (no pun intended) where there’s not a single character that you either enjoyed or even could root for. Can’t say if Acrimony is a misstep since I can’t think of one Tyler Perry movies I truly liked, but based on an audience grade of an “A-“, clearly Perry fans did enjoy his latest work of art, as for myself it was tough to sit through, and not even Taraji P. Henson’s magnetism could save this. |

| This is actually a rather dark looking movie, and I’m not talking about the tone, but literally fairly dark, even daylight shots tend to be tapped down some. The 1080p transfer otherwise is fine, detail is sharp and I really didn’t notice much in the way of banding, artifacting or aliasing, so not terribly flawed at least. That said, Tyler Perry movies don’t generally look great, even outside of his Madea franchise. |
AUDIO – 4.0/5 |
| The included DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is actually pretty strong. The bulk of the movie of course is principally dialogue so most of the action is output via the center speaker. But there are some moments of depth when the score/music picks up or for the finale. |
