I never really heard of this series prior to receiving this set, but the George Gently: The Complete Collection is right up my alley with the crime-drama subject and an interesting set of characters headlined by Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby.

ABOUT THIS RELEASE

In this acclaimed BBD detective drama based on the novels by Alan Hunter, Martin Shaw stars as Inspector George Gently, an incorruptible cop transplanted from London to the North East of England in the mid-1960s. Gently and his cocky young protégé, Sergeant John Bacchus (LEE INGLEBY), together investigate menacing crimes and confront the social and political changes rumbling through the country.

Guest stars include Richard Armitage, Phil Davis, Kevin Whately, Helen Baxendale, Mark Gatiss, Mark Williams, Eamoon Walker, Jemma Redgrave and Warren Clarke.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 3.0/5

This 13-disc set are housed across 3 HD Keep Cases with Series 1-2, 3-5 and 6-8 each getting their own case and side-slides into a fairly sturdy outer slip case. Included is an 18-page booklet containing historical information about the 1960s and text interviews with the cast and crew.

The discs are likely the same as the individual releases and thus all the features are also there including some Text Interviews, Behind the Scenes featurettes, Video Interviews with the cast/crew and a Gallery.

VIDEO – 4.0/5, AUDIO – 3.75/5

All the episodes in this set are presented with a 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and in high-definition as originally televised (1080i for Series 1-5, 1080p for Series 6-8). Detail is pretty good and despite some of the darker content, there are some splashes of color. Each episode is accompanied with PCM Stereo tracks, nothing amazing but does provide for clear dialogue levels.

OVERALL – 4.0/5

Overall, I never really heard of this series prior to receiving this set, but the George Gently: The Complete Collection is right up my alley with the crime-drama subject and an interesting set of characters headlined by Martin Shaw and Lee Ingleby. The collection’s video/audio transfers were good and features a bit above average.
