THE MOVIE — 3.0/5

Plot Synopsis: Ingrid Thorburn (AUBREY PLAZA) is an unstable young woman with a checkered past of obsessive behavior. Recently released from a mental facility following an incident in which she crashed a wedding and attacked the bride, she moves to Los Angeles to befriend Taylor Sloane (ELIZABETH OLSEN), an Instagram “influencer” with a fabulous artist boyfriend (WYATT RUSSELL), a camera-ready terrier, and an array of new products and brands to promote to her followers. After Ingrid adopts a Taylor-made identity for herself, her attempts to prove she’s BFF material are underway, that is, until she meets Taylor’s obnoxious brother Nicky (BILLY MAGNUSSEN), who threatens to tear down her façade.

Quick Hit Review: Ingrid Goes West is a biting commentary on this age of social media combined with the ever growing issues of stalking. Honestly, dark comedies aren’t always my thing and although this is very well acted especially by Aubrey Plaza, there were times it was hard to watch, only for the discomfort factor if anything. But even so, and as someone who isn’t exactly in tune with what goes on with social or who is a celebrity, but the obsessions with it can be seen even if you’re not steeped in that world. Of course, this isn’t the first movie to take on similar subject matter, one I’d recommend, if you don’t mind subtitles, is Pulse. Another recommendation, the ensemble drama, Disconnect.

VIDEO – 4.25/5

Universal releases Ingrid Goes West onto Blu-ray presented with a 1080p high-definition transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec) and in its original 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio. This is a mostly pleasant looking picture with bright colors, despite its darker comedic atmosphere, natural flesh tones and rather clean free of any major signs of artifacts or aliasing.

AUDIO – 4.0/5

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is perfectly serviceable especially for a film that’s mostly dialogue driven coming through the center channel. The front and rear speakers do get some reserved usage for things like ambient noises and music; it’s nothing especially great but still not bad.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, Ingrid Goes West is a well made movie that tackles the darker side of social media, with comedic bite, and the obsession that can take over one’s life as was the case for Ingrid played by Aubrey Plaza turning in a great performance. The Blu-ray release offers up a limited features but the video/audio transfers were good.
