Chuck is a run-of-the-mill boxing drama that features some solid performances headlined by Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss and Jim Gaffigan, though in Schreiber’s case, it’s amazing the work he was able to do with the amount of make-up caked on his face…

Chuck is the true story of Chuck Wepner (LIEV SCHREIBER), the “Bayonne Bleeder,” whose title fight against Muhammad Ali (POOCH HALL) became the real-life inspiration for the movie Rocky. The New Jersey boxer’s life is turned upside down when he becomes an unlikely celebrity and a tale of one man’s rise, fall and redemption, as he fights his way back from self-destruction to reclaim his life. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.0/5 |
All About Chuck (3:28; HD) is an EPK-like behind-the-scenes featurette with some promotional interviews. |
VIDEO – 4.0/5 |
Chuck enters the Blu-ray ring and is presented with a 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec). This isn’t a fantastic looking picture but there are splashes of color here and there and with it taking place in the 1970s, through the director’s choice I would assume, some shots have strong bouts of grain. |
AUDIO – 3.0/5 |
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track unfortunately doesn’t… wait for it… pack a punch. Sure, the dialogue levels sounded decent coming through the center channel and there is some minor ambient noises from the rear speakers, but the depth just isn’t there, particularly during the boxing matches where the crowd noises are more subdued. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
Overall, Chuck is a run-of-the-mill boxing drama that features some solid performances headlined by Liev Schreiber, Elisabeth Moss and Jim Gaffigan, though in Schreiber’s case, it’s amazing the work he was able to do with the amount of make-up caked on his face… Still, the movie itself is alright, nothing more. The Blu-ray released through Paramount offers good video, so-so audio and a razor thin bonus feature. |
