Special Effects is a convoluted crime-thriller that is merely one of many from the era. I did enjoy watching Eric Bogosian as the villain (SPOILERS!) so at least on that front it’s not a complete waste of time.

PLOT SYNOPSIS
|
When fresh-faced Oklahoma country boy Keefe (BRAD RIJN) comes looking for his wife Mary Jean (ZOE TAMERLIS), a wannabe actress using the name Andrea, he soon discovers the seamy side of Tinsel Town when Mary Jean is found dead and he’s the prime suspect. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5 |
This release comes with an Audio Commentary with Writer/Director Larry Cohen and Filmmaker Steve Mitchell as well as the Theatrical Trailer (1:42; HD). |
VIDEO – 3.5/5 |
Olive Films releases Special Effects onto Blu-ray presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. This isn’t anything special but detail at least is fairly sharp though colors aren’t exactly bright and I did notice the occasional specs of dust. |
AUDIO – 3.5/5 |
The disc comes with a basic but effective DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track which provides for good dialogue levels throughout while the typical 1980s score/soundtrack kicks on making use of the dual channels. Again, nothing great yet probably a so-so upgrade over its DVD counterpart. |
OVERALL – 2.0/5 |
Overall, Special Effects is a convoluted crime-thriller that is merely one of many from the era. I did enjoy watching Eric Bogosian as the villain (SPOILERS!) so at least on that front it’s not a complete waste of time. As far as Olive Film’s Blu-ray release is concerned, the video and audio transfers are adequate and at least there are features, even if it’s only a commentary and trailer. |
