Unintended is a nice indie drama featuring a few fine performances, especially Elizabeth Lail who popped up on my radar screen with the show Yes. Even with no real build up to some incredible dramatic moment, I still found this to be engaging enough.

THE MOVIE — 3.5/5

Note: The synopsis contains spoilers, skip if you don’t want to know about the plot.

Plot Synopsis: Lea (HANNAH WESTERFIELD), an adventurous and free-spirited thirteen-year-old, lives in idyllic Upstate New York with her academic parents. On the day her family prepares to relocate to Houston, her life takes a drastic turn. Just before their departure, in a tragic misstep, Lea is goaded into a fight with fifteen-year-old Bill (JAY JAY WARREN). Acting out of frustration, she gets hold of a gun and fires in Bill’s direction, causing him to fall into a deep shaft. Without knowing what became of him, Lea is forced to leave with her family.

Twelve years later, Lea (ELIZABETH LAIL), who has repressed the memory of those tumultuous events, is an emotional wreck: she is prescription drug dependent and on the verge of losing both her apartment and her job in New York. Unprepared to confront her demons, she ignores her problems until she almost drowns. In the hospital, her memories of that fateful evening slowly drift back and torment her. Did he die? And if he survived, what will he do when she finds him?

Quick Hit Review: Nice little, if not predictable, drama featuring some solid acting from a relatively unknown cast. Elizabeth Lail (who I became a fan of on the You TV show) and her younger counterpart, Hannah Westerfield, were particularly good. Better to go in without reading about it online. Still recommended.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0.5/5

Not much here in this “Special Edition” except the Theatrical Trailer and a Photo Gallery.

VIDEO – 3.75/5

The film is presented with a 1080p high-definition transfer and an unusual 2.23 widescreen aspect ratio. For the most part the picture looks adequate, with good detail on the close-ups mainly and colors are pretty bright even with the more serious tone of the movie involving drug abuse.

AUDIO – 3.5/5

The disc comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 tracks and either option is fine given the bulk of the film is dialogue with perhaps some minor depth for the music and score. Nothing noteworthy but serviceable for a drama.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Unintended is a nice indie drama featuring a few fine performances, especially Elizabeth Lail who popped up on my radar screen with the show Yes as the object of a psycho’s affections. Even with no real build up to some incredible dramatic moment, I still found this to be engaging enough to give this a try.
