Sherlock Gnomes wasn’t awful or anything but between a limited gnome-world and humor that rarely, if ever, landed, it was a bit of a chore to sit through especially when it sounded like the actors couldn’t give two rips either.

The opinions I share are my own.
THE MOVIE — 1.5/5 |
Plot Synopsis: After a string of garden gnome disappearances in London, Gnomeo (JAMES MCAVOY) & Juliet (EMILY BLUNT) look to legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes (JOHNNY DEPP) and his trusty assistant Watson (CHIWETEL EJIOFER) to solve the case of their missing friends and family. Quick Hit Review: Sherlock Gnomes isn’t god-awful like The Emoji Movie, but it’s just as humorless yet also a relatively harmless sequel to Gnomeo and Juliet, the Disney movie that came out 7 years ago… I was more bored than anything while watching this, going so far as to having nearly dosed off in some spots, and I imagine Johnny Depp, James McAvoy and Emily Blunt did the same in their emotionless performances. For kids under 8, this is probably fine, but like the first movie, you can just forget it even exists. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.5/5 |
This release comes with a glossy slip cover and inside a redemption code for the Digital HD copy (and DVD). Gnome is Where the Heart Is (7:00; HD) – This is a featurette where the cast (including James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp and Chiwetel Ejiofer) discuss the plot for the sequel. Nothing much more to it than that. All Roads Lead to Gnome: London Locations in Sherlock Gnomes (3:10; HD) looks at the research that went into placing real locales in this animated movie. Gnome Wasn’t Built in a Day: The Design and Art of Sherlock Gnomes (5:59; HD) examines the animation and detail from members of the crew. Miss Gnomer: Mary J. Blige and the Music of Sherlock Gnomes (4:09; HD) obviously goes into the music featured and recorded for the film. Stronger Than I Ever Was (4:05; HD) is more or less a music video by Mary J. Blige as shown in the movie. As if I didn’t get enough of it while it played over the menu… How to Draw:
Animating Sherlock Gnomes (1:36; HD) is a featurette made for kids on the development process of animation. |
VIDEO – 4.5/5 |
Paramount unleashes the gnomes onto Blu-ray where it’s presented with a 2.39 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer and the movie might stink, it is quite nice looking animation which does shine through with bright colors and sharp detail, especially the textures of the gnomes. |
AUDIO – 4.25/5 |
The disc comes with a strong DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track. Probably was unnecessarily excessive for a movie of this ilk, but still sounds great showing off crisp and clear dialogue levels and some good depth with the action-centric scenes. |
OVERALL – 2.5/5 |
Overall, Sherlock Gnomes wasn’t awful or anything but between a limited gnome-world and humor that rarely, if ever, landed, it was a bit of a chore to sit through especially when it sounded like the actors couldn’t give two rips either. The Blu-ray release offers up nice video and audio transfers and some thin bonus material. |
