Animal Factory is probably more noteworthy for the performances by Edward Furlong and Willem Dafoe than offering anything new in terms of story, and commentary, about prison life. Still worth watching, however.

PLOT SYNOPSIS |
Troubled youth Ron Decker (EDWARD FURLONG) is sentenced to a ten-year stint in the notorious San Quentin State Prison for a drug-dealing conviction. Inexperienced in the ways of prison life, he’s taken under the wing of Earl Copen (WILLEM DAFOE), an experienced con with the entire prison in the palm of his hand – inmates and guards alike. But as Ron grows increasingly cocky in his privileged role as Earl’s confidant, is he in danger of biting off more than he can chew with some of the jail’s more volatile inhabitants? |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.25/5 |
This comes with a 28-page booklet filled with essays and photos. As far as Arrow releases are concerned, it is a tad light with an Audio Commentary by author Eddie Bunker and Actor Danny Trejo; Eddie Bunker: A Life of Crime (20:50; HD), an interview with critic Barry Forshaw discussing the late Eddie Bunker; and the Theatrical Trailer (1:14; HD). |
VIDEO – 4.0/5, AUDIO – 3.75/5 |
Animal Factory comes to Blu-ray through Arrow Video and since the booklet makes no mention of it, doesn’t seem like any restoration work was done (or perhaps needed) and as such the 1.85 1080p high-definition picture looks pretty good with decent detail and colors are more on the muted side with the cold prison setting. The included DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Stereo track sounds nice having clear dialogue levels and some so-so depth. |
OVERALL – 2.75/5 |
Overall, Animal Factory is probably more noteworthy for the performances by Edward Furlong and Willem Dafoe than offering anything new in terms of story, and commentary, about prison life. Still worth watching, however. The Arrow Video offers good video/audio transfers but lackluster with the features. |
