PLOT SYNOPSIS

Diminutive teenager Francie Lawrence (SANDRA DEE) has a bunch of boy-crazy friends, but she could care less about boys. That is, until she goes to the beach one day and meets surfer Jeffrey “Moondoggie” Matthews (JAMES DARREN) and his friends, including Burt “The Big Kahuna” Vail (CLIFF ROBERTSTON). Now, Francie, whom the boys call “Gidget” – short for girl midget – wants to learn how to surf, so she buys a used board and dives into the sunny world of Southern California surfing fever.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0.5/5

This comes with an 8-page booklet. The only feature is the Theatrical Trailer (2:09; HD).

VIDEO – 4.75/5, AUDIO – 4.0/5

Gidget is presented in its original 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. I actually was rather impressed as the film has plenty of pop in the beach-y colors and skin tones appear natural looking. I didn’t notice any major or noticeable instances of dust, dirt or specs so some care was taken with the transfer.

The DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track sounds good albeit nothing amazing. Dialogue levels are clean however and any surrounds comes through with good clarity such as ambient noises (like the sounds of the ocean) or off-screen chatter.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, Gidget is a fun little 1950s-era tween romance-comedy that excels with the spunky and charismatic performance by Sandra Dee whose career never really took off. The Blu-ray released by Twilight Time has great video and good audio transfers while having only a trailer is disappointing.
