PLOT SYNOPSIS

It’s just a typical day in the lives of the employees, customers and passerby of a Los Angeles car wash. There’s a would-be robbery… an assembly line of the weirdest, baddest, shadiest characters you’ve ever met… and lots of ‘70s music to pass the hours till quitting time.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.5/5

This is #23 in Shout’s “Select” line. Features are halfway decent with an Audio Commentary by Director Michael Schultz; Workin’ at the Car Wash (12:13; HD) interview with Otis Day; Car Wash from Start to Finish (34:22; HD), an interview with Producer Gary Stromberg; and some Radio Spots (2:59; HD) and the Trailer (2:21; HD).

VIDEO – 4.0/5

Car Wash comes to Blu-ray through Shout Factory and is presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec). For the most part, this is a good looking picture with sharp detail, natural looking skin tones and colors are generally bright while dark levels appear stark. The big downside is, it’s not entirely clean as I noticed many dust marks and even scratches, taking the rating down a half point.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

The disc comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track. For the most part, the movie is dialogue heavy with some soul-funky 1970s music thrown in for good measure and modest depth. While nothing amazing, the track is decent enough with no major instances of pops, hisses or other flaws.

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, Car Wash is an oft funny 1970s ensemble comedy with the likes of Richard Pryor and George Carlin making brief appearances but making the most of their limited screen time. This Blu-ray released through Shout Factory’s “Shout Select” line offers good video/audio transfers and an okay selection of bonus features.
