Oklahoma is a nice addition to Shout’s new “Broadway” line and being, from what I could tell, being out-of-print on DVD, it’s nice to see this rendition of the classic play be put onto Blu-ray.

ABOUT THIS RELEASE

Hugh Jackman and Maureen Lipman star in the multi-award-winning Royal National Theatre production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical classic, Oklahoma!

The magic and energy of live theatre comes to Blu-ray in the triumphant 1999 mounting of one of the most beloved and timeless musicals every to grace the stage. Directed by theatre legend Trevor Nunn and starring an outstanding ensemble (including Josefina Gabrielle, Shuler Hensley, and Jimmy Johnston), Oklahoma! Shines brighter than any marquee.

This beloved, time-tested musical features some of the theatre’s most delightfully hummable songs, including “The Surrey with the Fringe On Top,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” and the joyous title tune, “Oklahoma!”

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5

The only feature included was a Behind-the-Scenes Featurette (24:04; HD). This was a lot better than I expected, includes on-set interviews with the cast and crew as they discuss re-creating the stage play onto the movie format.

VIDEO – 4.75/5

I don’t think there was major restoration work done, but it almost like there was. The 1.78 widescreen presentation looks absolutely fantastic with incredible clarity, sharpness and vibrant colors throughout. I realize it was filmed less than 20 years ago, but for what this is, I was rather surprised that it looked as good as it did.

AUDIO – 4.5/5

Not to be completely outdone, the disc includes a DTS-HD Master Audio Stereo track (though it might be 2.0 Mono) as the bulk came out of the center channel. Even so, this being a musical, those songs blare through with nice precision and dialogue levels were equally crisp.

OVERALL – 4.0/5

Overall, Oklahoma is a nice addition to Shout’s new “Broadway” line and being, from what I could tell, being out-of-print on DVD, it’s nice to see this rendition of the classic play be put onto Blu-ray featuring a pre-Wolverine Hugh Jackman belt some catchy tunes. This Blu-ray release offers excellent video and audio transfers and while there is only one feature, it’s worth a watch if only for fans.
