“The Girlfriend Experience” is one hell of an experience. It’s probably one of the more sexually explicit shows I’ve seen in quite some time yet there’s a good story at the core with just the right amount of mystery to keep one’s attention not to mention a strong performance by Riley Keough.

THE SEASON

Christine Reade (RILEY KEOUGH) is a second year student at Chicago-Burnham Law School and a new intern at a prestigious firm. Working hard to establish herself at the firm, her focus quickly shifts when a classmate introduces her to the world of transactional relationships. Known as GFEs, they are women who provide “The Girlfriend Experience” — emotional and sexual relationships at a very high price. Juggling two very different lives, Christine quickly finds herself drawn into the GFE world, attracted to the rush of control and intimacy.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.25/5

This release comes with three EPK featurettes covering the origins of the series and with members of the cast and crew: An Inside Look (2:17; HD), What is “The Girlfriend Experience”? (2:12; HD) and The Look of “The Girlfriend Experience” (1:52; HD). All told, there’s only 6:28 of footage.

VIDEO – 4.5/5

Anchor Bay gives us “The Girlfriend Experience” on Blu-ray shown in its originally televised 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture quality of this series is looks pretty darn good. Colors are generally vibrant even when the plotline is dark, skin tones appear natural, detail is sharp throughout and it was a clean looking transfer, free of artifacts, aliasing and banding.

AUDIO – 4.5/5

Each episode comes with a robust Dolby TrueHD 7.1 track which might seem like overkill but there’s plenty to test out the track from club scenes where the music makes usage of the LFE channel to the quieter moments as dialogue levels sound clean and crisp. It’s a well done track and one of the better ones for a TV on Blu-ray release, surpassed only by “Game of Thrones”.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, “The Girlfriend Experience” is one hell of an experience. It’s probably one of the more sexually explicit shows I’ve seen in quite some time yet there’s a good story at the core with just the right amount of mystery to keep one’s attention not to mention a strong performance by Riley Keough. This Blu-ray released through Anchor Bay is a tad weak in terms of features but the video/audio transfers are both top notch for a television series.
