Code Black: Season 1 is a well acted medical drama practically on the parts of Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman. However, as compelling of a drama that it is, there’s not much here that distinguishes it from the numerous others that have come before. Still, the characters are at least well written so it is worth watching.

THE SEASON

In the country’s busiest emergency room, you’re either looking for a miracle… or performing one. In Code Black: Season One, Residency Director Dr. Leanne Rorish (MARCIA GAY HARDEN) leads four first-year residents through the life-or-death challenges that will change the courses of their careers and lives. Rookies Christa Lorenson (BONNIE SOMERVILLE), Malaya Pineda (MELANIE CHANDRA), Mario Savetti (BENJAMIN HOLLINGSWORTH) and Angus Leighton (HARRY FORD) dive into the chaos of Angels Memorial Hospital, hoping to learn from the best while facing some of life’s worst. Head Nurse Jesse Sallander (LUIS GUZMAN), affectionately known as “Mama,” administers tough love as the ER’s main manager and Dr. Rorish’s closest friend. Each doctor has their personal reasons for being here, and the scars of their past come into play even as they work to save others’ futures.

Code Black: Season 1 arrives on DVD through Paramount presented with an anamorphic 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio as originally televised. Colors are more on the darker spectrum in keeping with the dramatic tone yet there are splashes of color giving it a nice pop.

The Dolby Digital 5.1 track offers clean dialogue levels throughout while the music as well as ambient noises round things out making for a nice track with some modest depth.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, Code Black: Season 1 is a well acted medical drama practically on the parts of Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman. However, as compelling of a drama that it is, there’s not much here that distinguishes it from the numerous others that have come before. Still, the characters are at least well written so it is worth watching. The DVD released by Paramount offers some decent bonus material and good video/audio transfers.
