“iZombie”: The Complete First Season is an incredibly fun series that takes more than a few cues from the likes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Veronica Mars” just taking advantage of the zombie craze. Still, this primarily unknown cast works so well together and Rose McIver is a star in the making.

THE MOVIE — 4.0/5

Season Plot Summary:
Meet Olivia “Liv” Moore (ROSE MCIVER), a medical resident on the fast track to a perfect life…until she’s turned into a zombie. Now stuck between half-alive and undead, Liv withdraws from her best friend (ALY MICHALKA), calls off her engagement to her fiancé (ROBERT BUCKLEY) and transfers to Seattle’s morgue to access the only thing that allows her to maintain her humanity: human brains.

But there are side effects to Liv’s new diet: She gets visions – flashes of the corpse’s memories – including clues as to how they were killed. Liv’s boss, a brilliant and eccentric examiner, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti (RAHUL KOHLI), encourages her to embrace this newfound talent and help an eager, unproven homicide detective, Clive Babineaux (MALCOLM GOODWIN), solve the murders. It’s the least a good citizen zombie can do!

Quick Hit Review:
“iZombie”
is an incredibly fun series, mish-mashing “Body of Proof” (if anyone remembers that show) with the wit, comedy and blood of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and zombie elements of “The Walking Dead”. Based off of the Vertigo comic book, “iZombie” is the perfect blend of mystery, horror and dry humor written so well and in conjunction with some great casting, not least of all Rose McIver (Tinker Bell on “Once Upon a Time” and Yellow Ranger on “Power Rangers R.P.M.”) with high honorable mention to Rahul Kohli as her quirky boss and confidant.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going into the pilot episode but with an innovative take on, at least in part, crime procedural, the show works so well and the 13 episodes of its first season flew by, in spite of a few pacing issues early on, easily overcome by McIver’s charisma and deadpan humor which helps matters. There’s something to be said that a new zombie-centric media (movie and television) could capture my attention but I for one enjoyed the hell out of this variation.

Episodes:

  1. Pilot
  2. Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?
  3. The Extermination
  4. Liv and Let Clive
  5. Flight of the Living Dead
  6. Virtual Reality Bites
  7. Maternity Liv
  8. Dead Air
  9. Patriot Brains
  10. Mr. Berserk
  11. Astroburger
  12. Dead Rat, Live Rat, Brown Rat, White Rat
  13. Blaine’s World

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.0/5

This 3-disc set is housed in a standard HD slim case. The two features from the DVD were ported over: “iZombie” 2014 Comic-Con Panel (28:58; HD) and some Deleted Scenes.

VIDEO – 4.25/5

Warner Home Video finally releases “iZombie”: The Complete First Season onto Blu-ray presented in its originally televised 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. In keeping with its darkly comedic/horror vibe, the show varies from darker elements to lighter scenes which show up quite well in HD. Detail looks sharp and all in all it looks like a clean looking picture free of artifacts, aliasing and other flaws.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

The season has been given a decently robust DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track. It’s nothing amazing but does provide for crisp and clear dialogue levels while the score/soundtrack makes the most usage of the front channels and ambient noises from the rear speakers. The LFE channel doesn’t really factor in but on the whole this probably is a fair upgrade over its DVD counterpart and slightly better compared to how it originally aired.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, “iZombie”: The Complete First Season is an incredibly fun series that takes more than a few cues from the likes of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Veronica Mars” just taking advantage of the zombie craze. Still, this primarily unknown cast works so well together and Rose McIver is a star in the making. This new Blu-ray released through Warner’s Archive Collection offers good-to-great audio and video transfers but a forgettable selection of bonus material.
