Love the Coopers has an impressive cast but below par script. It’s not all that entertaining despite having the likes of John Goodman, Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei and Alan Arkin (not to mention Anthony Mackie in a thankless role) and with some snips could easily air on TBS to fill airtime around Thanksgiving or Christmas.

PLOT SYNOPSIS |
When four generations of the Cooper clan (including JOHN GOODMAN, DIANE KEATON, OLIVIA WILDE, ED HELMS and MARISA TOMEI) gather for a reunion, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down – leading the Coopers toward a joyful rediscovery of family bonds and the magic of love. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 1.5/5 |
This release comes with a matted slip cover. Inside is a redemption code for the Digital HD copy and a standard DVD Copy. Making The Coopers (12:12; HD) is your standard behind-the-scenes featurette with some EPK interview footage with the cast and crew. Rags the Dog (1:16; HD) – Yep, even the dog gets his own featurette. Fun on Set (0:54; HD) is about the kids who say the darndest things. Music Video (3:21; HD) – “The Light of Christmas Day” by Alison Krauss and Robert Plant Previews – Miss You Already, The Choice, Don Verdean, The DUFF, The Big Wedding, Last Vegas |
VIDEO – 3.75/5 |
Lionsgate releases Love the Coopers onto Blu-ray presented in its original 2.40 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture more or less looks like what one would expect from a holiday comedy: colors are generally bright and cheerful and detail is decent enough. I didn’t notice any major instances of artifacting or pixilation making for a clean if not unassuming HD transfer. |
AUDIO – 4.0/5 |
The movie includes a standard but effective enough 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio track which provides crisp and clear dialogue levels while coming especially to life courtesy of the holiday soundtrack. As with the video, there are limitations since it is a comedy featuring minimal ambient noises and such. |
OVERALL – 2.0/5 |
Overall, Love the Coopers has an impressive cast but below par script. The Blu-ray offers a forgettable selection of bonus material while the video and audio transfers are both well done. |
