Son of God is a cheap money maker for the studio, re-cutting the popular “Bible” miniseries for a feature-length movie. What’s here is generally acceptable acting but more in line for television and some respectable production design although the visual effects aren’t anything great. It’s an inoffensive movie and isn’t terrible but also nothing I can recommend.

PLOT SUMMARY

(From the PR sheet, does not reflect personal opinions) — Son of God brings the story of Jesus’ life to audiences through compelling cinematic storytelling that is both powerful and inspirational. Told with the scope and scale of an action epic, this film features powerful performances, exotic locales, dazzling visual effects and a rich orchestral score. Son of God shows the life of Jesus from his humble birth through his teaching, crucifixion and ultimate resurrection.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 2.25/5

This release comes with a glossy slip cover. Inside is a DVD Copy and authorization code for the Digital Copy.

The only features included are some fluff and forgettable featurettes: Son of God Reborn (28:33; HD) is a behind-the-scenes feature with on-set interviews; From the Set: The Passion (7:19; HD) offers more BTS footage for the crucifixion scene; Son of God: Un Reino Sin Fronteras (22:58; HD) is the Spanish BTS featurette (w/ English subtitles); Put Your Faith in Practice (5:16; HD) shows how to introduce children to a relationship with Christ; and finally we get the Theatrical Trailer (2:27; HD).

VIDEO – 4.0/5

The 1080p high-definition (AVC encoded) transfer, presented with a 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio, looks fine with good detail levels but colors are purposely washed out geared more towards desert colors and such. There’s also some banding issues in transition shots and just all in all doesn’t quite have the pop compared with other recent releases.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

The 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track offered up is effective enough with decent dialogue levels and the score comes through the other channels well enough. It’s hardly an extraordinary lossless audio or anything but OK for what it is. The action elements show off some depth yet nothing noteworthy.

OVERALL – 2.5/5

Overall, Son of God is a cheap money maker for the studio, re-cutting the popular “Bible” miniseries for a feature-length movie. What’s here is generally acceptable acting but more in line for television and some respectable production design although the visual effects aren’t anything great. It’s an inoffensive movie and isn’t terrible but also nothing I can recommend.
