Plot Synopsis: Bittersweet film about a supply officer aboard a decrepit cargo ship during World War II who yearns for a transfer into a combat zone but is thwarted by the ship’s captain (JAMES CAGNEY), a petty tyrant. Forced to endure various humiliations in exchange for privileges, the crew engage in minor acts of resistance, and look to Mr. Roberts for inspiration and moral support. |

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment releases Mister Roberts as part of their Archive Collection. The film is presented in its original 2.55 widescreen aspect ratio and has been given a newly restored 1080p high-definition transfer. The picture here does look quite brilliant, colors are vibrant and detail for the most part is sharp and nicely defined throughout. There were no significant or obvious signs of aliasing or artifacting. The movie includes a standard but still very effective DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track which I found highly impressive. Dialogue comes across with excellent clarity and the depth is on display, even though most of the film takes place on a ship not on combat duty, making use of the front and rear speakers along with the center channel which is reserved mostly for the dialogue and some on-screen elements. |
