Dark River is a very well acted British-drama with some beautiful cinematography showcasing the North Yorkshire countryside and features a great performance from Ruth Wilson.

Plot Synopsis: Following the death of her father (SEAN BEAN), Alice (RUTH WILSON) returns home to Yorkshire for the first time in 15 years to claim the tenancy of the family farm she believes is rightfully hers. Once there, she encounters older brother Joe (MARK STANLEY), a man she barely recognizes. Joe is thrown by Alice’s sudden arrival, angered by her claim and finds her presence increasingly impossible to deal with. Battling to regain control in a fragile situation, Alice must confront traumatic memories to find a way to restore the farm. Quick Hit Review: Dark Ride is a somber, even haunting, British-drama featuring a powerful performance from star Ruth Wilson (Golden Globe winner for her performance on the Showtime series The Affair) with unique direction from Clio Barnard, blending flashbacks with the present tense, giving a distinctive look into the mind of a psychologically damaged character. What I especially liked was this was not one of those beat you over the head kind of films, instead allows the characters and their interactions to tell the story instead of manipulate the audience with a rousing (or dour) score, though the “One Hundred Acres” song from PJ Harvey that plays over the opening does certainly set the tone. |

| MVD Visual releases Dark River onto Blu-ray presented with a 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a 1080p high-definition transfer. The beauty of the North Yorkshire landscape looks incredible in HD, colors aren’t always the brightest though probably on point with the dramatic story, but nonetheless still looks great. Detail is fairly decent and outside of maybe some minor banding, appears to be pretty clean. |

| For whatever reason, these MVD discs only come with the standard Dolby Digital 5.1 but even so, this does output some good depth with every creak in an old home or the sounds of the sheep on the farm. Dialogue comes through the center channel with good clarity as well. |
