Between Worlds is yet another failed film from Nicolas Cage and this is perhaps one of this worst performances, which is saying something, though he gets no help from a poor script.

THE MOVIE — 1.5/5 |
Plot Synopsis: Joe (NICOLAS CAGE) is a struggling truck driver haunted by the memory of his deceased wife and daughter. Joe’s life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Julie (FRANKA POTENTE), a woman with mysterious spiritual powers, whose daughter, Billie (PENELOPE MITCHELL), lies in a coma. Julie enlists Joe’s help to stop Billie from crossing over to the spirit world, but when Billie awakes, her body is possessed, by the vengeful spirit of Joe’s dead wife. Quick Hit Review: I’ve seen the devolution of Nicolas Cage over the years but at least some of his bad movies resulted in some outlandish, over-the-top performances… not sure I can say we got that in his latest direct-to-video/vod outing. Early on Cage just delivers a lazy, poor performance though by the finale, he does get a bit bizarre but not nearly enough to make this fantasy-thriller a worthwhile venture. Franka Potente though never really rose to stardom following her standout performance in The Bourne Identity (and in fairness, perhaps didn’t pursue a more Hollywood career) and here, considering the script, did her best. Equally the young Penelope Mitchell isn’t terrible either, hopefully gets better work in the future. This is the sophomoric writing and directorial for Maria Pulera, following 2016’s much maligned crime-thriller Falsely Accused, and perhaps on the surface there was an interesting idea, but it was badly executed and the script itself probably needed an extra pass, and with a more respected actor in the lead (sorry Nic Cage), this might’ve made for an interesting, and f’d up version of Ghost. |
SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5 |
No features but this does come with a matted slip cover and redemption code for the Digital HD copy. |
VIDEO – 4.0/5 |
Lionsgate releases Between Worlds onto Blu-ray presented with a 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and a 1080p high-definition. The picture quality isn’t anything incredible, but on par with what you would expect from a DTV film. Colors aren’t terribly vibrant, not surprising considering the darker tone while detail was relatively sharp. There were some minor instances of banding in one scene but otherwise this was a fine looking transfer. |
AUDIO – 4.25/5 |
The disc includes a basic yet more than serviceable DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that outputs both the crisp and clear dialogue through the center channel and the depth comes to life particularly during the finale. |
OVERALL – 2.0/5 |
Overall, Between Worlds is yet another failed film from Nicolas Cage and this is perhaps one of this worst performances, which is saying something, though he gets no help from a poor script. This Blu-ray is basic with no features while the video and audio transfers are at least respectable. |
