Love in the Afternoon is a fun little romance-crime-comedy that excels on the charms of its stars, Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn. The Blu-ray released through the Warner Archive’s Collection doesn’t have much in the way of features but the video and audio transfers are both well done.

PLOT SUMMARY

From Back Cover: She plays the cello. He plays the field. She’s coltishly young. He’s worldly and mature. Lovestruck conservatory student Ariane knows she’s not like millionaire American playboy Frank Flanagan. But if she pretends to be just as much a cosmopolitan lover as he is, maybe the magic of l’amour will take hold.

May-December romance is in bloom when Billy Wilder directs and Audrey Hepburn and Gary Cooper meet for Love in the Afternoon. Laughs, Parisian settings, champagne elegance – Wilder, in his first collaboration with long-time co-writer I.A.L. Diamond, delivers them all in a soufflé-light homage to his filmmaking idol Ernst Lubitsch, punctuating it by casting Lubitsch alumnus Maurice Chevalier, the cinema’s ambassador of Gallic charm who smoothly plays Ariane’s detective father.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0.5/5

Theatrical Trailer (3:00; HD)

VIDEO – 4.25/5

Love in the Afternoon comes to Blu-ray courtesy of Warner’s MOD Archive Collection presented in its original 1.85 widescreen aspect ratio and given a pleasant 1080p high-definition transfer (MPEG-4 AVC codec). This black & white film has some nice stark contrast to go along with sharp detail and a clean looking transfer that is free of any major instances of artifacts or aliasing.

AUDIO – 3.75/5

The film includes a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 Mono track and while it is on the limited side, and topping out at times, dialogue at least sounded clear enough and any outside elements such as the score or ambient noises, it’s a fine lossless track given this is a 60+ year old movie.

OVERALL – 3.5/5

Overall, Love in the Afternoon is a fun little romance-crime-comedy that excels on the charms of its stars, Gary Cooper and Audrey Hepburn. The Blu-ray released through the Warner Archive’s Collection doesn’t have much in the way of features but the video and audio transfers are both well done.
