Review: Comes a Horseman BD + Screen Caps

Comes a Horseman is an oft forgotten western-thriller that features three amazing performances, particularly by Jason Robards, with beautiful cinematography from the late Gordon C. Willis (The Godfather Trilogy).

PLOT SYNOPSIS

Set in the American West of the 1940s, director Alan J. Pakula’s Comes a Horseman gives us a pair of little-guy ranchers (JAMES CAAN, JANE FONDA) who join forces against the depredations of a ruthless land baron (JASON ROBARDS) determined to expand his empire at whatever cost.

Along with the usual 8-page essay booklet, the disc only comes with the film’s Original Theatrical Trailer (2:49; HD).

 

VIDEO – 3.0/5

On Twilight Time’s site, they acknowledge the transfer isn’t the best with numerous bouts of scratches, dirt and other film damage and indeed, it is littered with it from beginning to end. Even so, the movie, presented here in its original 2.35 widescreen aspect ratio, and a 1080p high-definition transfer, at least does have decent detail throughout and colors are by and large vibrant.

AUDIO – 3.5/5

The disc comes with a serviceable DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track and for what is generally dialogue-heavy film, that’s all one would expect. There is a moderate amount of depth when the action does pick up particularly during the finale and for a movie where the video elements weren’t the best, and one going on nearly 40 years old, it’s an impressive lossless track.

 

OVERALL – 3.0/5

Overall, Comes a Horseman is an oft forgotten western-thriller that features three amazing performances, particularly by Jason Robards, with beautiful cinematography from the late Gordon C. Willis (The Godfather Trilogy). This Blu-ray from Twilight Time offers flawed video, decent audio and minimal bonus material.
