“Forensic Files”: The Best of Volumes 1-3 are a fine selection of episodes and for fans, like I am, it is nice to have these finally to watch at home although it seems at any given moment there is a marathon on Headline News. That said, the SRP on this is a tad much but if you can nab it for under $10, it might be worth it.

THE MOVIE – 3.75/5

“Forensic Files” is a long-running series that has been shown on a variety of channels in various forms such as “Mystery Detectives” and “Medical Detectives”. It was also recently repackaged on Investigation Discovery entitled “Cause of Death”. The series features re-enactments of different cases with narration by veteran voice over actor Peter Thomas. Originally aired in 1996, the series continued on until 2011 where it now resides, oft in marathon form on the weekends, on HLN (Headline News).

I’ve enjoyed the series more often using it as background noise though the cases are very interesting and as an avid watcher of the true crime shows that air on Investigation Discovery and have seen the same crime showcased with, in my opinion, “Forensic Files” did it the best.

This “Best of” includes various episodes outlined here:

VOLUME 1:

  1. Sands of Crime (Season 13, Episode 13)
  2. Sworded Scheme (Season 13, Episode 15)
  3. Fashion Police (Season 13, Episode 17)
  4. Church Dis-Service (Season 13, Episode 18)
  5. Seedy Intentions (Season 13, Episode 19)
  6. DNA Dragnet (Season 13, Episode 20)
  7. Office Visit (Season 13, Episode 40)
  8. Show-In for Murder (Season 13, Episode 41)

  1. Family Interrupted (Season 13, Episode 42)
  2. Runaway Love (Season 13, Episode 43)
  3. Watchful Eye (Season 13, Episode 44)
  4. Waste Mis-Management (Season 13, Episode 45)
  5. Dirty Little Secret (Season 13, Episode 46)
  6. Lights Out (Season 13, Episode 47)

SPECIAL FEATURES – 0/5

Sadly, no features were included.

VIDEO – 3.5/5

“Forensic Files”: Best-of Volumes 1-3 arrives on Blu-ray, for the first time, presented with a 1.78 widescreen aspect ratio and while this wasn’t a series meant for high-definition. The re-enactments don’t look the best while interview footage tend to provide better colors and decent enough detail levels. There is some artifacts and aliasing in certain shots so it’s not the prettiest looking picture.

AUDIO – 3.0/5

Unfortunately there’s only a standard Dolby Digital 2.0 track but its adequate enough providing for clear dialogue yet the audio does top out in some areas and the depth is quite limited. I can’t fault the audio too much because as with the picture, it was never meant to have incredible audio for a syndicated program.

OVERALL – 2.75/5

Overall, “Forensic Files”: The Best of Volumes 1-3 are a fine selection of episodes and for fans, like I am, it is nice to have these finally to watch at home although it seems at any given moment there is a marathon on Headline News. That said, the SRP on this is a tad much but if you can nab it for under $10, it might be worth it.
