Alien Outlaw is a B-movie of the sci-fi western variety and while certainly not good and drags for the first half, I will say at least Kari Anderson plus Lash McRue were a lot fun and I can’t say I hated the experience.

THE MOVIE — 1½/5

Plot Synopsis: When a UFO crash-lands in the Appalachian backcountry, it releases a squad of interstellar predators, playing “The Most Dangerous Game” with any Earthlings who cross their path. But these alien outlaws encounter unexpected resistance in the form of a gun-toting blonde (KARI ANDERSON) and her mentor (LASH LA RUE).

Quick Hit Review: Alien Outlaw is a, as described on the back cover, love letter to 1950s B-movies from writer-director Phil Smoot. While I can appreciate Smoot’s intentions and everything, this is a film that at times does lag and worse, the humor was more cringe-worthy than anything resembling funny. Still, I will say Kari Anderson in the lead role was nice to look at and the makeup effects on the creatures were respectable. As a whole, Alien Outlaw was at least watchable and giving it the “MST3K” treatment among friends might make for a fun night.

SPECIAL FEATURES – 3½/5

This release comes with a matted slip cover and the inside artwork is reversible.

Audio Commentaries:

  • Director Phil Smoot
  • Editor Sherwood Jones & Actors Stephen Winegard and Kimberly Mauldin

They Came from the Swamps: Making Alien Outlaw (22:20) is a featurette with interviews by Smoot, actors Kari Anderson and Gil Newsom as well as casting coordinator Mary Dalton, all looking back on the production.

Interview with Editor Sherwood Jones (8:46) is another new feature with Jones discussing his work on the movie.

The disc also includes News Conference (5:41) footage; Behind the Scenes (4:15) of some raw footage; Archival Interviews (12:32) with Lash LaRue and Kimberly Mauldin; and Home Movie (4:31), an EPK featurette.

VIDEO – 4¾/5

Alien Outlaw debuts on Blu-ray received a new director-approved 1080p high-definition transfer which was a 4K restoration from the 16mm original camera negative. Simply put, this picture looks far better than a movie like this has any right to look. Detail is stunningly sharp while colors are vibrant without appearing oversaturated. The natural film grain and noise is still present giving it some texture.

AUDIO – 4½/5

The movie comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 track which was surprisingly strong with only some hints of pops but otherwise the dialogue comes across with good clarity and there is fine depth for a movie of this age and with only two channels.

OVERALL – 3/5

Alien Outlaw is a B-movie of the sci-fi western variety and while certainly not good and drags for the first half, I will say at least Kari Anderson plus Lash McRue were a lot fun and I can’t say I hated the experience, however this isn’t really worth sitting through.
